Detroit Riots of 1967

In late July 1967, a confrontation between the Detroit police and the patrons of an unlicensed bar on 12th Street escalated into a five-day riot--among the most destructive in U.S. history--which left 43 people dead, over 400 injured, and over 7,000 arrested. The riots revealed the tensions and turbulence between racial and economic classes in Detroit, and instigated the founding of the New Detroit committee and the Detroit Renaissance, institutions dedicated to restoring the community and revitalizing the city's economy, respectively. Max Fisher was a prominent player in both organizations.
