Senator Jacob Javits Portrait
January 1, 1966
Abstract
Jewish Republican Senator Jacob Javits, of New York, was Max Fisher's pick as a potential running mate for Michigan Governor George Romney in 1966. Despite Romney's losing bid to represent the party in the 1968 election, Javits and Fisher remained lifelong friends. Javits later said, "[Fisher's] intercessions have always been made with an eye to the highest national interest of the United States, which he [and I feel] is parallel to the interest of Israel."
