Nixon wanted Max in his administration. He offered him, I think, Secretary of Treasury. He offered him jobs. But Max felt that that would be sort of a downgrade. This way, he can go in and talk to the President about a lot of things. Now he got involved in volunteerism, which is something very dear to his heart. He got involved as a conduit between Washington and Jerusalem. Basically, what Max had was this: Republican Presidents trusted him and Israeli Prime Ministers trusted him. And deals are worked out long before you hear of them and before they’re announced on the front page of newspapers. There’s got to be a conduit for those deals.
